The Differences Between a Cat’s Belly Button and a Human’s Belly Button

les différences entre le nombril des chats et celui des humains

Cats do have a navel, but it is usually far less noticeable than a human belly button. That difference often surprises people, especially because the presence of a navel is tied to a shared biological experience: life in the womb. Like humans and other placental mammals, kittens are connected to their mother before birth by an umbilical cord, which supplies the growing fetus with nutrients and oxygen.

The reason the cat’s navel is so discreet comes down to how that cord is handled at birth and how the area heals afterward. In humans, the umbilical cord is typically cut with a medical instrument, and the remaining stump dries out and falls off later, leaving a more visible scar. In cats, the process is much more natural and leaves a much smaller mark. The result is usually just a slight indentation rather than the round, protruding shape many people associate with a human belly button.

Another simple reason the cat navel is hard to spot is fur. A cat’s coat covers the abdomen and hides small surface details that would be easy to see on bare skin. Even when the navel is there, it is often completely concealed unless you are looking very closely.

The cat umbilical cord and how it differs from the human one

The umbilical cord in cats has its own specific characteristics, and these are closely related to the type of placenta they have. Cats have a zonary placenta, which is less invasive in the mother’s uterus than the human placenta. In practical terms, this means that the connection between mother and offspring works differently during pregnancy, and the healing left behind after birth is generally very subtle.

The way the cord is severed also matters. In humans, the cord is cut a few centimeters away from the skin, leaving a short stump that later dries and separates. In cats, the mother typically bites through the cord very close to the body, leaving only a minimal trace. Because the cut is so close to the skin, there is far less leftover material to dry out or create a prominent scar.

This is why the cat belly button is usually not something people notice at a glance. It is not absent; it is simply reduced to a small scar or shallow depression. If you gently stroke a cat’s stomach, you may be able to find it as a tiny indentation located roughly halfway between the hind legs and the ribcage. Even then, it may take patience, since the area is small and often masked by dense fur.

Why mammals have navels at all

The presence of a navel is a sign of a shared developmental stage, not a uniquely human trait. Most placental mammals are born with some trace of the umbilical connection that supported them before birth. What varies is the appearance of the scar that remains afterward. In humans, the scar is usually more obvious because of the way the cord is cut and because the skin around the abdomen is bare. In cats, the scar is faint and hidden, but it serves the same biological purpose as a human navel: it marks the point where the umbilical cord once attached.

This small detail is a good reminder that animals can seem very different on the surface while still sharing the same basic biology. Cats, like humans, begin life relying on a maternal connection that is essential for growth and survival. Once birth occurs, that connection is no longer needed, and the body closes the site naturally.

How to locate a cat’s navel

If you are curious and want to find a cat’s navel, the best approach is to be gentle. A relaxed cat may allow you to feel a tiny depression on the belly, but only if it is comfortable with being touched there. The navel is generally located on the midline of the abdomen, between the hind legs and the chest. Because it is so small, it should not be confused with the nipples or with any skin texture created by the fur itself.

It is important to handle the cat calmly and respect its limits. Many cats do not enjoy having their stomach touched, so any attempt to identify the navel should be brief and careful. The goal is simply to notice how subtle it is, not to probe or press the area.

A small anatomical detail that says a lot

The cat’s navel is one of those little anatomical facts that reveals how much domestic animals have in common with humans and other mammals. It is easy to overlook because it is so discreet, yet it reflects an important part of early development. The difference between a visible human belly button and a nearly invisible cat navel is mainly a matter of anatomy, birth process, and scar formation.

Rather than being a curiosity with no meaning, the cat navel is a practical example of how the same biological structures can leave very different traces depending on the species. The cord, the placenta, and the healing process all interact in slightly different ways, and those differences shape what we see on the outside.

Cats continue to fascinate people for many reasons, and even a small detail like their navel can make us look at them with fresh eyes. Observing these subtle features is one more way to appreciate how closely related mammals are, while still recognizing the unique traits that make each species distinct.
