Feeding: How Much Dry Dog Food Should You Give an Adult Dog?

Alimentation : quelle quantité de croquette peut-on donner à un chien adulte ?

Dogs, like humans and other companion animals, need proper nutrition. That means feeding them in a way that is balanced, consistent, and adapted to their needs. How many meals should a dog eat each day? How much kibble should you serve? Why does the amount matter so much? And is feeding an adult dog really different from feeding a puppy? These are common questions, and this article answers them clearly.

How much kibble should you give your dog?

Just like for people, dog food should be measured carefully. The right amount depends on the dog, its level of activity, and above all the food itself. Different kibbles have different calorie contents and nutritional values, so two products that look similar can require very different portions. There are also many choices available, as you can see on animalis, with a wide range of flavors and nutritional profiles.

To calculate the right quantity, you first need to consider your dog’s daily energy needs and then the calorie content of the kibble. The basic formula is:

(dog’s daily calorie needs x 100) / energy content of the kibble per 100 grams.

This calculation helps you estimate the amount to serve each day. It is important to dose dog kibble properly because, as with human food, nutrition has a direct impact on health. A family dog should not eat too much, but it should not eat too little either.

How many meals per day for an adult dog?

For a puppy, meals are usually split into four or five portions a day to support growth and make digestion easier. For an adult dog, two meals a day are generally enough: one in the morning and one in the evening. That is a little like how many humans organize their own meals.

It is often best to give the larger meal in the morning or around midday rather than late in the evening, because digestion tends to be easier during the day when the dog is more active. Even so, the most important thing is not just the timing, but making sure the total daily amount is right. Your dog must receive enough energy and nutrients for the whole day without being overfed.

When and how should you serve the meal?

Some people believe a dog should eat only after its owner has finished eating. Others prefer to feed the dog at the same time, or almost the same time. What matters most is consistency. A dog does better when mealtimes are predictable.

In practice, the dog eats from its bowl or an automatic feeder, while you eat at the table. The point is to create a routine. Just as you would not normally eat breakfast at 8 p.m. and dinner at 7 a.m., your dog should be fed at regular times each day, ideally at the same hours whenever possible.

Adult dog vs. puppy

This difference deserves special attention, because the amount of food and the number of meals are not the same. A puppy has very different nutritional needs from an adult dog, and the transition must be gradual. You should avoid changing suddenly from four or five meals a day to two.

It is also important to remember that the kibble itself may not be the same. Puppy food is formulated for growth and development, while adult food is designed to meet different needs in terms of energy, minerals, and overall balance. Feeding stages should therefore be adapted carefully rather than switched overnight.

In short

The quantity of kibble you give an adult dog matters just as much as the brand, the flavor, or the time of day you serve it. A dog needs regular meals and the right portion size to stay healthy, feel satisfied, and maintain a stable weight. Skipping meals or serving too little can be just as problematic as overfeeding.
