A pony, also known as a “dwarf horse,” is a small horse. Popular with children, it is often used for beginner riding lessons. These sessions are meant to teach young riders the basics of equestrian sports as well as the daily care needed to keep miniature horses healthy and comfortable. Once used to carry goods, ponies are now often treated as true members of the family. Although they are sturdy by nature, keeping a pony requires practical knowledge and a healthy environment. Here are a few essential tips to help you get started.
Tip 1: Feed your pony properly
Good nutrition is essential for growth and overall health. An unbalanced diet can lead to colic or other illnesses, sometimes serious, in your pony. Even though ponies are small, they eat a substantial amount of food, which is why equestrian centers strongly recommend leaving food available at all times.
As for the ration:
- One bale of hay or alfalfa per day, or a mix of both;
- Granulated or concentrated feed as a supplement once a week. Oats and corn flakes are the options most often recommended by the specialists at LES PONEYS D’EOLE.
To support digestion and make daily care easier, feed your pony at fixed times. Also make sure it always has access to fresh water and salt.
Tip 2: Provide a suitable shelter
There are several possible options. Whatever you choose, the main goal is to make sure your pony can live and develop in the best possible conditions.
Here are four types of shelter for a pony:
- A pasture, with a simple windbreak, an open stable, or a small shelter;
- A stall, which is practical and reassuring and helps keep the pony clean and safe. Stalling also protects the animal from bad weather, slipping hazards, and wild animals such as wolves or bears;
- A paddock;
- Boarding facilities for horses.
Tip 3: Clean the bedding regularly
For the pony’s comfort and wellbeing, daily cleaning of the bedding is essential. Remove droppings first, take out yesterday’s straw, and replace it with fresh bedding. On average, this task should be done twice a day, in the morning and again in the afternoon or evening.
Note: if you are short on time, there are professional cleaning services that can take care of this task for you.
Tip 4: Follow the right daily care routine
To keep your animal healthy:
- Take it out once a day for a short walk so it can enjoy some sunshine and relax;
- Groom it every day. Regular grooming helps tone the muscles and gives you a chance to care for the coat properly. Be sure to brush the mane and tail carefully with a comb to detangle them and keep them soft and healthy;
- Have its teeth checked every quarter, or at least every six months;
- Inspect and clean its hooves every day. This is especially important because they are delicate. To help prevent certain illnesses, protect its legs with hoof boots and contact a veterinarian for routine checks;
- Have a veterinarian examine it at least once a year. This visit is also a good time to update your pony’s vaccinations.
