Can My Cat Get Sunburned? A Complete Guide

Les chats peuvent-ils attraper des coups de soleil ? ?

One afternoon, I caught my cat Félix napping on the terrace, stretched out in the full midday sun. His ginger coat was glowing beautifully, but it made me wonder: can a cat actually get sunburned? The answer is more concerning than many owners realize.

Unlike what people often assume, a cat’s fur does not offer complete protection. Some parts of the body remain exposed to UV rays, and the damage can go far beyond mild discomfort.

Yes, cats can get sunburned

Cats can absolutely suffer from sunburn, especially on areas where the fur is thin or absent. The ears, the tip of the nose, the eyelids, and sometimes the belly are among the most vulnerable spots.

Cats with light coats, including white or ginger cats like my Félix, are at greater risk. Their skin contains less melanin, the natural pigment that helps protect against ultraviolet radiation. Hairless breeds, such as the Sphynx, are especially exposed across their entire bodies.

Did you know? White cats are 13 times more likely to develop skin cancer linked to sun exposure than cats with dark coats.

How to recognize sunburn in a cat

The first sign of sunburn in cats is usually redness, especially on areas with little fur. The skin may feel warm to the touch and can appear slightly swollen.

If exposure continues, more worrying symptoms can appear: flaking skin, crusting, or even small sores. Your cat may also become more irritable and may scratch or lick the affected area excessively.

In more serious cases, repeated sun exposure can lead to precancerous lesions, particularly on the ears and nose. These areas may then require veterinary treatment.

How to protect your cat from the sun

Prevention is your best defense. Limit your cat’s access to very sunny areas during the hottest part of the day, generally between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you have a balcony or terrace, create shaded spots with umbrellas or shade sails.

For cats that are especially sensitive, there are sunscreens specifically formulated for animals. Never use human sunscreen, since it often contains ingredients that are toxic to cats. Apply the product to sensitive areas about 30 minutes before sun exposure.

Protective clothing is another option, especially for hairless cats. Lightweight cotton shirts can help shield delicate skin without restricting movement.

What to do if your cat gets sunburned

If you suspect your cat has a sunburn, start by moving them to a cool, shaded place. You can gently apply cool water compresses to the affected areas to help ease discomfort.

Avoid home remedies such as aloe vera or essential oils, which are often toxic to cats. Likewise, never pop any blisters that may form.

Keep a close eye on the symptoms. If the redness lasts more than 24 hours, if blisters appear, or if your cat seems to be in pain, contact your veterinarian promptly. Proper treatment can help prevent complications.

Remember: prevention is always better than cure. A cat protected from the sun is a healthier cat.

Creating a safe environment for your cat

Protecting your home from excess sunlight does not require major changes. Install curtains or blinds on the most exposed windows while still allowing enough natural light for your cat to enjoy some warmth safely.

If your cat loves sunbathing, offer alternatives: a heated cushion placed in a shaded corner can satisfy that need for warmth without exposing them to UV rays. Cat trees positioned near north-facing windows can also provide a good compromise.

For outdoor cats, consider adjusting their time outside. Morning outings or late afternoon play sessions let your cat enjoy the garden without putting their health at risk.

Protecting your cat from the sun means giving them a longer, more comfortable life. Watch their habits, adapt their environment, and do not hesitate to ask your veterinarian for personalized advice. After all, our small companions deserve all the care they need to enjoy every ray of sunshine safely.
